05/16/2014 | Baseball
KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team scored two runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Rhode Island Rams in the 10th inning on Friday afternoon, 4-3, in Kingston, R.I.
With the victory, Richmond improves to 23-26-1 on the season overall and to 12-12 in Atlantic 10 play. With the loss, Rhode Island falls to 13-39 on the year and to 7-17 in league action.
Senior Cory Moheit, who entered the game in the fourth inning, led the way offensively for the Spiders, going 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Jansen Fraser went 3-for-5 on the day with two RBI, while senior Nick Poulos also drove in a run for Richmond.
Junior RHP Ryan Cook gave the Spiders a solid start, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits. Junior LHP Dylan Stoops was terrific out of the bullpen for Richmond, tossing the final 4.1 innings to earn the win.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning, Poulos got on base thanks to a single through the middle of the infield. Fraser followed, lining a triple to left-center field to tie the game at 1-1.
Rhode Island would score the game's next two runs, one in the sixth and one in the eight to take a 3-1 lead in to the top of the ninth inning.
Needing a rally, the Spiders came through in a big way. Sophomore Tyler Beckwith led off the frame with a single up the middle. After Moheit drew a walk, senior JB Gadd laid down a great sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third base.
After a walk, the bases were loaded with one out for Poulos. The senior promptly cut the lead in half, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field on the first pitch he saw. With two outs, Fraser came through with a huge, RBI single through the left side of the infield, tying the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Rams were able to get runners on first and third with two outs, threatening to win. Stoops was having none of it, however, as the junior recorded a huge strikeout to force extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, sophomore Doug Kraeger led off the inning with a walk. Two batters later and after a balk, Kraeger was on second base with two outs for Moheit. On a 2-1 offering, the senior came through with one of the biggest hits of his career, lining a single down the right-field line, scoring Kraeger and giving Richmond a 4-3 lead.
Richmond completed its rally in the bottom of the 10th, as Stoops worked a perfect 1-2-3 inning to secure the dramatic, come-from-behind win for the Spiders.
