Spiders Fall To Saint Joseph's In A-10 Tournament
05/23/2014 | Baseball
ST. LOUIS – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team fell to the Saint Joseph's Hawks, 12-2, in the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Thursday night in St. Louis.
With the loss, Richmond's 2014 season comes to an end, finishing with an overall record of 24-28-1. The No. 2-seeded Hawks move on to face the No. 1-seeded Saint Louis Billikens on Friday afternoon.
Senior OF Nick Poulos had a pair of RBI in his final collegiate game, while 3B Matt Dacey had three hits to lead the Richmond offense on Thursday night.
Out of the bullpen, junior LHP Dylan Stoops pitched well, tossing 3.1 innings of relief, allowing just one earned run. Sophomore RHP James Lively pitched 1.2 shutout innings of relief, striking out three. Sophomore RHP Dan Martinson also pitched well pitching 0.2 scoreless innings.
Saint Joseph's jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring three runs in both the first and second innings to seize early control of the game. The Hawks then added two more runs to take an 8-0 lead in to the bottom of the seventh.
After a leadoff single from Dacey, senior Adam Forrer entered the game for the Spiders and made an immediate impact, lacing a double to right field to put runners on second and third base. Two batters later, Poulos got the Spiders on the board, lining a two-run single up the middle, cutting the Hawks' lead to 8-2.
Trailing 9-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Spiders threatened to cut in to the Saint Joseph advantage. After senior 2B Mike Small drew a walk, sophomore 1B Doug Kraeger singled to left field. After Dacey collected his third hit of the day, the bases were loaded with just one out. Richmond was unable to take advantage, however, as a pop out and a groundout ended the threat.
After Saint Joseph's tacked on three unearned runs in the top of the ninth, the Spiders entered the bottom half trailing 12-2.
Swinging at the first pitch, senior C Cory Moheit missed a home run by a foot, flying out to deep left-center field for the inning's first out. After a strikeout, senior OF JB Gadd drew a walk and was joined on base by Aaron Newman who also reached on a base-on-balls. The potential rally ended there, however, as a strikeout sealed the win for the Hawks.
Despite a rash of injuries this season, the 2014 Spiders persevered to make their fourth-consecutive Atlantic 10 Tournament – the only team in the league to do so. Under first year head coach Tracy Woodson, the Spiders earned the No. 5 seed in the A-10 Tournament – the best seed since 2012 – and posted an impressive road win at NC State.
