Summer Spider Series: Emily Newman
06/27/2014 | Women's Lacrosse
The Richmond Spiders women's lacrosse team takes full advantage of resources that the University of Richmond provides during their summer months by studying or taking internships abroad, or staying in the U.S. to take classes and gain work experience. Over the next few weeks, the members of the team will be sharing their summer adventures.
This is the next in our Summer Spider Series detailing some of our Spiders' summer adventures. Follow these posts to learn more about a few Spiders and what they have been up to this summer!

Summer Spider Series: Rising junior Emily Newman, a Business Administration major with a concentration in marketing and art history minor, is taking two courses abroad in London, England this summer. Emily is taking her classes at Richmond University, through the American Institute for Foreign Studies. By registering her program with the University of Richmond, Emily is able to transfer her courses over for credit. Hear more about Emily's experience abroad in her own words below…
EN: For my study abroad experience, I am participating in a Non-UR program in London, England, where I am taking two courses over six weeks. I feel so fortunate that my credits easily transfer over for my minor, which is art history. I both live and take classes at (coincidentally) Richmond University, which is located in South Kensington, a beautiful area of London. I am a minute's walk from Hyde Park as well as Kensington High Street, which has tons of shops and restaurants to go to.
Although I have only been in London for just over a week, I have already had an incredible experience. Through my program, I have scored free tickets to musicals, the Harry Potter walking tour, as well as cricket matches and shows at the famous Globe Theatre. Aside from that, my sister (who is doing the program with me) and I have gone to the London Eye, have walked the Tower Bridge, and have
made time for lots of sightseeing. In doing all of this, I've become a little more accustomed to the cultural differences between the UK and America. For instance, I now know not to tip (whoops) and have become familiar with the Tube (London's underground transportation). A little help from fellow Spider Katie Cahill also allowed me to pick up on things a bit faster. Fortunately, I was able to join an inexpensive gym only ten minutes from my dorm, where I complete my summer training program for lacrosse. A typical day consists of going to class for three hours, going to the gym or running through Hyde Park, and then going out with friends to different parts of London. I must say, running past monuments like Royal Albert Hall and Kensington Palace makes working out much easier! Thankfully, not having class on the weekends makes it possible to travel, so I plan on going to Amsterdam and Paris during the course of my stay.
Aside from that, I never thought I could enjoy a class as much as I am enjoying my art history
course, Museums and Galleries of London. Each day, we meet our professor at a different museum (all of which are free), where we walk through and learn about all the art and artifacts inside. In the first week alone, we've visited the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the British Museum. It is pretty amazing to see the works of art that I've been learning about for the past two years in my art history courses at Richmond, ranging from Leonardo Da Vinci to Vincent Van Gogh! All in all, I couldn't be happier with this experience so far and couldn't be more grateful that Richmond has allowed me to be a student-athlete with the option to study abroad.
