This week, University of Richmond May graduate Mali Kobelja and rising junior Kelley Yang were both named winners of the 2014 College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Honorable Mention Scholar All-America Award, supported by Nike Swim.
This was the third such award for Kobelja and the second for Yang.
The Honorable Mention Scholar All-America Award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the semester, or cumulative average, and have achieved a "B" time standard but did not qualify or compete in their respective national championship.
One of Richmond's most decorated student-athletes, Kobelja won her third-straight Most Outstanding Swimmer award at the Atlantic 10 Championships, the first female swimmer to capture that maximum number of awards, after also earning the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer at the 2011 A-10 Championships. She won 11 individual and 16 team relay gold medals at her four A-10 Championship appearances, adding one silver for a total of 28 medals, the most an individual athlete can win in a four-year career at the Championships. Her name currently appears 15 times in the A-10 record books for times in either team relay or individual events. She was also on the maximum of three Atlantic 10 Conference All-Academic teams. She is currently one of two Atlantic 10 student-athletes in contention for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, which will be bestowed in the fall.
Yang also captured the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer Award, in 2013, with a pair of individual golds. She helped to win four team relay golds and three individual medals (a gold, silver and bronze) in the 2014 A-10 Championships.
