Spider Football Practice No. 8 Report
08/11/2014 | Football
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The No. 20-ranked University of Richmond Spiders football team continued practice leading up to the 2014 season on Monday morning.
The Spiders practiced for two hours on an overcast day at Robins Stadium. The team reviewed what it learned during the first week of camp and also held a short-yardage scrimmage near the end of practice.
Practice Notes
- In 11-on-11 drills, the team worked on its no-huddle offense. The entire drill was fast-paced, with team switches coming quickly.
- On a misdirection play, RB Jacobi Green went untouched for a 60-yard touchdown run to the right side.
- A few plays later, QB Michael Strauss connected with WR Rashad Ponder with a great pass, going 45 yards for a completion in double coverage.
- On a similar play, it looked as though QB Michael Rocco had hooked up with WR Brian Brown for a big gain, but DB Dominique Miller made a nice play to break up the pass at the last minute.
- In the second set of 11-on-11 drills, LB Aaron Roane read the play perfectly, laying a big hit on RB Seth Fisher in the backfield on a screen pass.
- DB Reggie Barnette nearly came away with an interception after breaking up a Strauss pass.
Post-Practice Quotes
“I thought we had really good tempo today and that's what the emphasis was. We had two periods where we were doing some up tempo work and I thought our kids did a great job of getting to their spots quickly, understanding their roles and their jobs when it is a fast tempo that's critical so we're trying to catch the defense off guard. We had the 40-second clock running so that was good to get that work for the quarterbacks to see the clock and get in and out of the huddle when we did huddle. It was a good tempo so I was pleased with that. I think that we are progressing and we continue to remain healthy and that's critical.”
-- Assistant coach Brandon Streeter on practice
“I thought the offense really responded well. We had a lot of team periods today, so I think that was good work for us getting ready for the season. We had a couple periods of turbo early, so that really helped us work on our tempo and I think we responded well.”
-- TE Hunter Westfall on the offense
“I thought the defense did pretty well today. We had our ups and downs, but I thought we finished strong. We worked some in turbo today and it's just something we are going to have to get adjusted to. It's going to be harder in practice than it's going to be in games, so if practice is harder than the game then we are going to be in good shape.”
-- DB Ayo Ogunniyi on the defense
