08/16/2014 | Football
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders football team continued its quest for a 2014 CAA Championship on Saturday when the squad hit the field for its 15th practice of training camp.
The Spiders hit the field at Robins Stadium to implement their first full scrimmage of the 2014 camp. The squad began practice at 9 a.m. this morning and brought the officials out an hour later for the scrimmage that consisted of coming out and redzone situations.
Practice Notes
- The defense was the star of the today as it only allowed one touchdown with an interception and multiple punt and field goal plays.
- DL DeAnthony Muse came up with an early TFL when he hit RB Jeremiah Hamlin in the back field on a third down to force the punt squad to come out.
- DB Reggie Barnette shined as he picked up the lone interception – a pass from QB Michael Strauss on a first and 10 situation.
- DB Dominique Miller ended the day for both squads with a pass breakup in the endzone that prevented a touchdown pass from QB Michael Rocco that was intended for WR Jarmal Bevels.
- The offense found the endzone on a pass from QB David Broadus that TE Christian Conklin got his hands on to allow PK Peter Yoder to get the extra point.
- RB Gordon Collins had a great day, picking up the longest run of the scrimmage – a 35 yarder to the 15-yard line.
- PK Peter Yoder took all field goals, while P D.J. Helkowski took all the punts.
Post-Practice Quotes
“We had good intensity the whole day, but the defense found a way to make more plays than us. We made some errors here and there, and the defense capitalized on them. We have to cut out the turnovers like my interception and the negative plays like those penalties that will kill drives. But all and all, we have stuff to go back to the film to work on and get better at.”
