UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The No. 20-ranked University of Richmond Spiders football team continued practice on Wednesday evening at Robin Stadium.
The team treated Wednesday like a gameday, holding its third scrimmage of training camp at 6 p.m. The Spiders dressed in complete uniform, with the offense debuting the new blue jerseys for this season.
Practice Notes
- On the first drive of the game, WR Reggie Diggs and QB Michael Strauss connected on a nice, 15-yard out for a first down.
- RB Jacobi Green had a nice first series, reeling off three nice runs during the drive.
- The offense capped off the first drive with a six-yard touchdown run up the middle from RB T.J. Moon.
- In the second series, the first-team offense looked solid, with DB Justin Grant coming up with a pass breakup and DL Evan Kelly with a would-be sack of QB Michael Rocco.
- In the third series of the scrimmage, great pass coverage led to a sack on Strauss from DL Gary Wortham.
- Later in the drive, Moon recorded his second touchdown of the scrimmage, this one coming on a three-yard, play-action pass that Moon caught in the flat.
- In the fourth series, QB Kyle Lauletta connected with WR Will McCombs for 15 yards after an athletic catch from the sophomore.
- Later, LB Eric Wright and DL Justin Williamson combined to pressure Lauletta, forcing an incompletion.
- On the next drive, DB Tafon Mainsah made a nice play to break up a pass near the goalline.
- The offense wouldn't be denied on the series, however, as Rocco hooked up with Green on a shovel pass for an eight-yard score.
- In the sixth series, LB Omar Howard made a terrific play, reading QB David Broadus to make the interception.
- Broadus bounced back nicely, however, connecting with WR Porter Abell on the very next play for a 25-yard completion.
- After halftime of the scrimmage, Green finished off a drive with a four-yard touchdown run through the middle of the field.
Post-Practice Quotes
“For the defense, we need to stop making errors. We made a lot of mistakes out there today that we need to eliminate before we hit the field next Saturday against Morehead State. But luckily we got 10 more days to get better and hopefully we can get that done.”
— LB Omar Howard talks about today's practice for the defense
“Today went well for the offense. Coach put us through many plays to get us ready for the season and I think we handled them well. All and all it was a good day. We are a little fatigued but it will get us prepared for Saturday and we should get off to a good start.”
