Duo Of Boys And Salas Shine At Penn Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The doubles duo of Brittany Boys and Katya Salas of the Richmond women's tennis team shined at the University of Pennsylvania's Cissie Leary Invitational this past weekend.
Boys and Salas, who played No. 2 doubles for the Spiders last season, started the weekend off for the Spiders as they upset Eskenazi/Daniel of UPenn, 8-6. Then on Saturday, the duo defeated Temple's Okajima/Willis, 8-2, to advance to the quarterfinals.
The weekend concluded for the Spiders when Boys/Salas fell to a tough Yale duo of Finke/Shklover who eventually fell in the semifinals.
Kelsey Williams picked up impressive singles wins for the Spiders, when she easily defeated Danielle Mirda from Harvard, 6-0, 6-4, in Flight B Friday. Then later, collected victories over Courtney Amos from Yale, 6-2, 6-3, and Ivana Vukovic from ODU, 6-3, 6-1, in the Flight B Consolation bracket.
Boys and Emily Gitman also picked up consolation victories, while Salas and freshman Gaby Rosales collected two each over a tough Penn State squad. Boys took an impressive 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory over Princeton's Katrine Steffensen, while Gitman also took a three-set win over Fanni Dudas of Saint John's, 6-1, 4-6, 10-7.
Salas took victories over Melissa Minniti (6-1, 6-0) and Hannah Kratky (6-0, 6-1), and Rosales took wins over Lisa Petruzillo (6-1, 6-1) and blanked Emily Rivers (6-0, 6-0) all from the Nitty Lions squad.
Play was capped off with extra doubles matches for the Spiders. Boy and Salas defeated Penn State's Rivers/Petruzillo, 8-1, and Melissa Kandinata and Rosales blanked Minniti/Kratky, 8-0.
Richmond will continue its fall season when it travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Wake Forest Invitational Friday, Oct. 3.
