09/22/2014 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – This past Saturday, the University of Richmond Spiders baseball team volunteered at the Pretty Muddy 5k race at Pocahontas State Park.
The entire Spider baseball team arrived at the course at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning. The team helped set up the start/finish line and registration area and then were assigned to different areas around the course.
For five hours, the team helped run the different obstacles around the course, handed out water and offered encouragement and assistance to the 1,600 runners of the race. Proceeds from the event went to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
“Being a part of our program means more than just playing baseball,” Richmond head coach Tracy Woodson said. “Being a Spider also means being active in the community. Our guys thoroughly enjoyed helping out at the Pretty Muddy and hopefully this becomes a yearly volunteer opportunity for Spider Baseball.”
Following lunch at 11 a.m., it was the team's turn to run the course. Most of the team took part in the family race at 1 p.m. as part of the squad's fall training.
