Women's Lacrosse In Midst Of Fall Practice
09/29/2014 | Women's Lacrosse
With one fall game under their belt, the Richmond women's lacrosse team is attempting to build off of last season's A-10 Championship appearance and 11-7 record from 2014.
Entering her third season at UR, Allison Evans saw eight new freshmen integrate into the returning squad that finished in a tie for second in the league and achieved the most wins for the program since the 2007 season.
“After just two weeks of fall camp, we wanted to break it down to the basics,” said Evans, who graduated the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year (Taylor Blazer), but retains First-Team All-Conference performer Emily Doyle, Second-Team All-League star Anna Jeszeck and All-Rookie team member Emily Castle, along with a talented cast of retuning players.
“We are complicated in what we do defensively and it is nice to have a lot of the ladies coming back already knowing what we're trying to do, which also helps get the younger players into the system a little faster.”
Goalie Emily Boyce finished with an 8.19 goals-against average, the fifth-lowest in program history. The team allowed just 7.83 goals per game all season, a new record-low total on a team that frustrated teams in trying to get to goal.
The team had its first of four fall scrimmages on Sunday, making a good initial showing at High Point.
“We worked hard and were first to 50-50 balls and really competed,” added Evans. “We hustled in the midfield and had a great first showing.”
Evans will focus on pushing tempo a little more this fall, working on the fast break and second break with this unit that has continued to gel with the coaching staff over the previous two seasons.
The Spiders will play at Virginia Wednesday night before two more fall showings, at James Madison on October 11 and finally at William & Mary on October 25.
The 2015 season will start in February.
