
Women's Basketball Falls At George Washington Saturday

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite three Spiders in double figures, the Richmond women's basketball team fell to the George Washington Colonials, 77-67, at the Smith Center in Atlantic 10 action Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Janelle Hubbard led the way for Richmond (9-6, 1-2 A-10) with 19 points and seven rebounds, while junior Lauren Tolson followed with 18 points and two blocks. Redshirt-senior Genevieve Okoro capped off the double-digit scoring for Richmond with 11 points and four rebounds.
But George Washington's (14-2, 3-0 A-10) Jonquel Jones led both teams with 21 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks to help the Colonials win their 12th straight.
The Spiders kept it close for the first 20 minutes of play. The two teams went into the half with the Colonials only up 37-33. Hubbard and Liz Brown led Richmond with nine points each, while Brown collected five rebounds and two blocks in the first half. The senior finished the day with the nine points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Richmond shot 48 percent from the floor and was 3-of-4 from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes of play. GW shot 45 percent from the field with Jones leading the way with 13 points. The Colonials led for the entire first half.
The Spiders tied the score for the third time all day at the 16:37 mark of the second half. Down three with nine minutes to go, Richmond was held scoreless for four minutes to allow GW gain an eight point lead that eventually secured the win.
Overall, Richmond shot 44 percent from the floor and 22 percent from behind the arc. GW outrebounded the Spiders, 43-30, and held a 15-4 advantage in second chance shots.
Richmond will continue on the road when its travels to Philadelphia, Pa., to take on the University of Pennsylvania Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.
