Men's Lacrosse Finishes Fall In Baltimore Sunday
10/08/2015 | Men's Lacrosse
After rains postponed the Richmond men's lacrosse Instructional Clinic to October 10, the Spiders are winding down the fall practice portion of the schedule with a final day of games scheduled for Sunday, October 11 in the Nicholas Colleluori Classic Baltimore. The tournament supports the HEADstrong foundation, committed to improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their families.
The Spiders will take on Harvard at 11:15 a.m. and Albany later at 1:45 p.m. at Homewood Field at Johns Hopkins University.
"We can't think of a better way to cap off our fall season by competing against top quality opponents and more importantly supporting a great cause in the HEADstrong Foundation,” said Richmond head coach Dan Chemotti.
“Thank you to Cheryl Colleluori and Coach Pietramala for putting on this event and including the University of Richmond. We are honored to be a part of what will undoubtedly be a great day of fall lacrosse.”
From the HEADStrong Foundation on the backstory of this event…
After experiencing the dedication and impact of the HEADstrong Foundation at last year's University City Classic, Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse head coach Dave Pietramala was inspired to create a special fall event at Homewood Field to support the organization. At the conclusion of last year's event, Pietramala made a promise to the Colleluori family that he would bring an event to life to help advance their mission, support patients from the Baltimore region and fund HEADstrong's initiatives at the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The inaugural event will also feature host Johns Hopkins, playing at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Each player involved with the four participating teams will take the field wearing HEADstrong's iconic lime green shoelaces to promote awareness for the cause. HEADstrong will honor heroes and their families at the event presenting grants and gifts from the organization intended to improve their quality of life. HEADstrong President and Nick's Mom Cheryl Colleluori will also present the prestigious Nicholas Colleluori Award to a member from each program whose contributions both on and off the field are transforming the landscape of their represented program.
HEADstrong will have an awareness station featuring the latest in HF awareness merchandise and apparel with 100% of the proceeds supporting the mission. Additionally, a five-dollar charitable donation will be asked in lieu of admission.
“Last year Coach Dave Pietramala and the John Hopkins Blue Jays embraced our mission at the University City Classic, since that time we have developed a very special relationship with the program, which has presented some incredible opportunities to support the Sydney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Medical Center,” said Cheryl Colleluori, HEADstrong President.
“On behalf of the HEADstrong Foundation™, the Colleluori family and our founder and my son, Nicholas, we wish to thank all of the participating teams for embracing our mission.”

HEADstrong™ is an athletic rooted organization that serves the cancer community by granting direct financial assistance to those financially impacted as a result of the disease, by providing complimentary long-term housing and amenities for those traveling to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for cancer related treatments through Nick's House™, by funding innovative cancer research through the Nicholas E. Colleluori Lymphoma research fund, by serving family meals and offering outlets of entertainment, by providing fresh groceries to patients being discharged from lengthy hospital stays, by delivering comfort kits to newly hospitalized patients preparing for treatment or transplant, and by lending an arm of support through their peer to peer advocacy group.
The blueprints for the Foundation were conceptualized by Nicholas “HEAD” Colleluori in 2006, from his hospital bed while he underwent treatment for non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, which ultimately claimed his life. Today, Nick's vision is being fulfilled through the relentless efforts of his family, athletes and supporters across the country uniting in the fight against cancers.
