Spider Field Hockey Hosts Weekend Of A-10 Foes

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond field hockey (5-6, 2-0) returns home this weekend for a pair of games against Atlantic 10 teams, facing La Salle at 3 p.m. on Friday and Saint Joseph's on Sunday at noon.
Richmond lost its only game last weekend, succumbing to No. 4 Virginia, 4-1, on Sunday. The game marked Richmond's sixth contest against a nationally-ranked opponent. UR's exceptionally strong schedule has Richmond ranked No. 17 in the latest RPI.
Against Virginia, freshman Emily Braunewell tied an A-10 season high with 18 saves. She now ranks second in the conference with 6.33 saves per game, and is seventh with a .731 save percentage.
The Spiders will be playing their first home conference games of the season, after last week's VCU game was postponed due to weather. That game will be made up on Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. UR won its two A-10 games on the road at conference powers Lock Haven and UMass.
Richmond's Kelly Quinn leads the team and ranks fourth in the conference with four goals scored. Avery Safford is tied for fifth in the league with her four assists. Kasey Gilbride has been strong defensively, tallying three defensive saves which is tied for second in the league.
La Salle (4-6, 1-2) comes to Richmond after two straight wins over Saint Louis and Monmouth. The Explorers are fourth in the league with a 1.80 goals against average and are second in the league with an average of 8.7 penalty corners per contest. Eileen Dzwill and Abbey Lawrence both lead the team with three goals each.
Saint Joseph's (4-6, 2-1) will be clawing for A-10 tournament seeding this weekend as it is tied for third in the conference standings. Last time out, St. Joe's lost to Bucknell, 4-2. Freshman Anna Willocks maintains the team lead in goals (seven) and points (17). Monica Tice's five assists lead the Hawks; Jenny Morris and Willocks have each chipped in with three of their own. Junior goalkeeper Amelia Deibler has posted a pair of shutouts and a 2.61 goals-against-average in 10 starts.
Last season, Richmond defeated Saint Joseph's, 5-0, on the road, but lost to La Salle, 2-1, on the road.
