UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders football team announced its 11-game 2016 schedule on Thursday – a slate highlighted by six home games at Robins Stadium.
Three of the Spiders' first five games will take place at Robins Stadium but the season will begin in Charlottesville opposite Virginia on Sept. 3. It will be the 33rd meeting between the cross-state rivals and the 10th-straight to take place in Charlottesville. The two programs last met in 2014.
After a visit by Norfolk State on Sept. 10 to open Robins Stadium, CAA play will begin with a trip to Stony Brook on Sept. 17. The Spiders last squared off with SBU in 2013 on the road and came away with a 39-31 victory. Richmond is 2-0 all-time opposite the Seawolves.
Family Weekend will bring Colgate to town. Richmond is 3-1 all-time opposite Colgate and has not lost since 1983, outscoring the opposition 91-31.
On Oct. 1 Richmond brings Towson to Robins Stadium looking to reverse a two-game losing streak against the Tigers. The Spiders lead the all-time series 5-4 with the first meeting coming in 2004, resulting in a 24-0 Spider victory. The last Richmond win in the series came in 2010 at Robins Stadium, 28-6.
The weekend of Oct. 8 will send the Spiders to Albany, N.Y. for a date with the Great Danes, the first repeat opponent from the current 2015 season. Richmond dispatched Albany, 38-31, at Robins Stadium on Oct. 31 and now holds a 3-0 advantage in the all-time series.
The season continues with Homecoming on Oct. 15. The Spiders will see Villanova on the opposite sideline in what will surely be a big matchup in the CAA standings. Richmond is currently 11-21 all-time opposite the Wildcats but have an opportunity to improve that this weekend with a visit to Philadelphia.
On Oct. 22 Richmond heads to Elon where it won in 2014, 30-10. Elon will return a currently young core but the Spiders knocked off the Phoenix 27-14 at Robins Stadium this season. Richmond leads the all-time series 6-0.
Following a bye week the Spiders will welcome James Madison back to Robins Stadium on Nov. 5 for a rematch of the titanic matchup that occurred in Harrisonburg just a few weeks ago. Richmond now leads the all-time series 18-15 after beating the then No. 3 Dukes 59-49 on a day JMU hosted ESPN's College GameDay.
Delaware comes to Richmond on Nov. 12 for the first meeting with the Spiders since 2013 when the two programs crossed paths in Newark. Richmond came away with a 46-43 victory that day and also won the last matchup at Robins Stadium in 2012, 23-17. Richmond still trails the all-time series however, 20-10.
The regular season will conclude on Nov. 19 with a trip to Capital Cup rival William & Mary for the 126th meeting between the two programs. The regular season finale between these two foes often has postseason implications and next season may be no different. The two sit atop the CAA currently and will likely square off for the CAA title next weekend at Robins Stadium.
Ticket information for the 2016 Spider Football season will be released later in the year.
