Swimming And Diving Competes at George Mason
11/19/2015 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Richmond swimming and diving gets back together for the last time before Thanksgiving in the three-day Patriot Invite, hosted by George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. The meet helps the Spider swimmer simulate the rigors of the Atlantic 10 Championships meet, with a field of teams and restrictions on the number of events individual swimmers can compete in during each day.
The Spiders picked up a pair of wins in dual meets to start the year, taking out Mason and Duquesne at the Richmond Duals to start the season. The diving unit won against Clemson and tied East Carolina when they competed last on November 7.
The UR squad continues to find the right events for each swimmer as the season progresses, particularly for the large freshman class. The divers are rounding into form, with junior Irina Chiulli (Westwood, Massachusetts) already winning a pair of Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week awards. Freshman Nicole Piercy (Newport News, Virginia / Hampton Roads Academy) took Rookie of the Week honors after the Richmond Duals in mid-October.
In the Patriot Invite, swimmers are limited to three individual events and four relays, the same rules that apply in the conference championships. The Spiders are joined by host Mason, along with American, Howard, Seton Hall, Shippensburg, UMBC and UNC Wilmington. Drexel is also competing this weekend for the first time in the Invitational.
Richmond will compete for the final time this semester in a dual meet at George Washington on December 5 before heading to the annual Florida training trip, where they will take on Rhode Island for a dual on January 2.
