Last Time Out
Richmond jumped ahead of Eastern Kentucky early and never looked back last Sunday afternoon, leading by as many as 31 points in the 81-62 victory. For the second-time in as many games the Spiders had a player go over 20 points. Last Friday night Janelle Hubbard went for 20 opposite Old Dominion and on Sunday it was Lauren Tolson, the Spiders' second-leading scorer behind Hubbard last season, who poured in 21.
Vs. Old Dominion
The Spiders used a huge third quarter to jump ahead of the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs on Friday afternoon and held off the opposition down the stretch to secure a 62-57 victory to begin the 2015-16 season. Junior guard Janelle Hubbard pocketed 20 points for the seventh time in her career with Micaela Parson and Lauren Tolson pitching in 13 and 12, respectively. Richmond trailed by as many as nine on two occasions in the second quarter but led by as many as 12 in the third.
Parson's Career Night
Sophomore Micaela Parson posted a then-career high 13 points against the Lady Monarchs. She was 4-8 shooting, 1-3 from three-point range and 4-4 from the free throw line to go with three rebounds and a pair of steals in 22 minutes of action. Parson started at the point guard spot for the first time in her young career and with the Spiders leading by just five with 2:15 to play she hit her lone three ball to put the lead at eight and essentially put the game out of reach.
Big Minutes For Freshmen
Freshman forwards Tuuli Menna and Salita Greene saw significant action in their collegiate debuts opposite ODU. Menna made the start for the Spiders and played a team-high 33 minutes, scoring six points on 2-6 shooting and grabbing five rebounds. Greene made the most of her 18 minutes, scoring seven points going 1-1 from the floor and 5-6 from the free throw line. She also hauled in five rebounds for a co-team high with Menna.
Salita Greene
The freshman from Durham, N.C. has given coach Shafer all he could have asked for over her first two games as a Spider. Greene scored seven points and pulled down five boards in her debut in just 18 minutes and exceeded that standard opposite EKU, scoring eight points on 4-5 shooting, three of which were mid-range jump shots, in just 17 minutes off the bench. The freshman grabbed over 1,000 rebounds in high school and should continue to see big minutes for the Spiders off the bench.
