High Scoring Matchup Doesn't Go Richmond's Way In 98-80 Loss

MIAMI, Fla. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon when it went down in a shootout with Marquette (2-4) in the championship game of the FIU Turkey Slam, 98-80.
Richmond was led by junior guard Janelle Hubbard who put 23 points on the board on a career-best 10 made shots and 2-5 from three-point range. Hubbard added three rebounds, a pair of assists, a block and a steal to her stat sheet as well. Micaela Parson scored 18 points on 3-11 shooting and went a career-best 12-17 from the free throw line.
Kylie Murphree had the best game of her young season, absolutely stuffing the stat sheet with six points, team-high five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal. Her effort on the defensive end will not fully show up on the stat sheet as she constantly found herself around the ball, in passing lanes and helping in transition.
Richmond failed to score the first points of the game for the first time this season but responded with a triple from Lauren Tolson to make it 3-2, Richmond with 8:36 to play in the first quarter. That would be the only lead of the game for the Spiders who allowed Marquette to built a 12-point lead before Parson closed the quarter with a driving lay-in at the buzzer.
Trailing by 14 with 7:26 left in the half, Murphree drove the lane and scored then Hubbard went on a personal 5-0 run to cut the lead to seven with 6:01 left. That would be as close as Richmond would come in this one for the rest of the game. The pace quickened and Marquette closed the first half with a 50-38 lead. The 50 points are the most Richmond has allowed in the first half of a game so far this season.
Hubbard hit a jumper to get things started in the second half but Marquette responded with a three on its next possession and built an advantage of 20 by the 3:55 mark of the third quarter. Richmond continued to battle and cut it down to 11 with 8:23 left in the game but that would be the last push for the Spiders. The teams traded buckets for the remainder of the fourth quarter and Marquette came away with the victory.
Richmond will return to the Robins Center on Tuesday, Dec. 1, to host Furman at 5 p.m. It will be the third game in five days for the Spiders and will lead into the team's first true road game of the season at Providence on Saturday, Dec. 5.
