Women's Lacrosse Holds Clinic With AJC Kids
11/04/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
Richmond women's lacrosse hosted students from Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School for a clinic after team practice on Tuesday. The team put the AJC students through drills working on fundamentals of stick work and some of the principals of scoring.
The Spiders are finishing up their fall practice sessions and moving into the individual practice and strength and conditioning parts of the calendar.
“Our partnership with AJC is a great opportunity for our players to reach out to the community through the game of lacrosse,” said Richmond head coach Allison Kwolek. “The team not only loves teaching the sport but also engaging with the girls and learning more about their lives. We look forward to continuing to grow with AJC over the year.”
The AJC girls not only get to come out and learn lacrosse skills, they get an example of a female student-athlete and the experience on being on a university campus. One of the aims of the clinic is to show these young ladies to set goals for themselves and have an understanding that they can play and learn at a university if they remain dedicated and disciplined.
“Its always fun working with AJC,” said senior midfielder Emily Newman (New Albany, Ohio) of the afternoon. “It's great to share our love of the game with the girls and really get to connect with them and hang out on the field.”
According to the Web site, the AJC school is an independent, faith-based middle school, providing full-tuition scholarships to students of limited economic resources primarily from Richmond's East End. Through a program focused on the whole child, they help empower students and graduates to change the trajectory of their lives, setting their sights on success in high school, college, and serving their communities. The AJC school values all staff, parents and volunteers as integral to the success as a School and a 'community of affection.'
The school, in its sixth year of operation, started with 25 students in 2009, and grew to 85 students this fall.
The Spiders completed back-to-back seasons of 10 wins or more, the first such stretch since 2007 and 2008. The 2016 season begins with a home date with Mercer on Saturday, February 13 at noon. Admission for the nine-game home schedule at Robins Stadium is free.
