02/10/2015 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond goalie Benny Pugh (Powhatan, Virginia / Woodberry Forest) posted 15 saves in Richmond's 9-5 win over Saint Joseph's last Saturday and is the first-ever winner of the Southern Conference Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
The 15 saves are the second-most in a game in program history, just two shy of his school-record 17, which he set last season on the road against the same Hawks team. Pugh and the defense fended off a three-man disadvantage for 30 seconds and a two-man down situation for the 30 seconds after. The Spiders held the Hawks scoreless over a stretch of 29:29 in the middle of the game to post a 5-0 scoring run through the middle two quarters, which included a shutout quarter (3rd), the fourth shutout quarter the defense has posted in team history. Pugh also led UR with four ground balls.
At the first NCAA statistics report, Pugh leads the nation with a save percentage of .750 with his 15 stops. The firve goals allowed were the lowest in program history for a single game.
Pugh was an All-Tournament team member last season and finished second in conference in goals-against average. He has all seven of Richmond's win over two seasons in goal.
The Spiders will host Rutgers this Saturday at Robins Stadium at noon.
