UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Redshirt-senior Genevieve Okoro tied the school record with 19 free throws made in the Richmond women's basketball 72-60 win over La Salle Saturday evening at the Robins Center on Senior Day.
Okoro went 19-of-22 from the line that helped the Gibbsboro, N.J., native tie her career-high 27 points to lead the Spiders. She also charted a season-high 15 rebounds for her 27th-career double-double to lead both teams.
Okoro's 19 free throws tied the Richmond women's basketball free throw record that was set on Dec. 10, 1983 by Karen Elsner in a Spider loss to Wake Forest at the Robins Center.
It was also Okoro's 15th double-digit scoring game of the season and her 62nd of her career, sixth 20-point game of her career and her 34th 10-rebound game of her career.
Richmond had two other Spiders in double figures as junior Lauren Tolson followed with 17 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Janelle Hubbard capped off the scoring threat with 12 points to help improve the Spiders to 16-9 overall and 8-4 in the league.
The loss dropped La Salle to 12-13 overall and 3-9 in the Atlantic 10.
Freshman Kylie Murphree also had a career night as she dished out six assists. She also added four points and two rebounds for the Spiders.
Richmond got right to business in the first half, shooting 38 percent from the floor and went 9-of-11 for an 82 free throw percentage. Okoro had eight of the 11 Richmond free throws in the first 20 minutes. She led both teams at the half with 14 points and six rebounds. The two teams went into halftime with Richmond leading, 37-29.
Although the Explorers shot a 47 percent from the floor in the first half, they only took one trip to the charity stripe and were outrebounded, 22-15.
Richmond continued with the momentum in the second half, as La Salle couldn't cut the Spider lead to under seven. Richmond led by as many as 16, which came with 2:25 left in the contest.
Shooting 40 percent, Richmond continued its impressive free throw percentage as it only missed two in the final 20 minutes of play. Okoro notched 11-of-13 from the line in the second period.
Overall, Richmond outrebounded the Explorers 44-33 and picked up 13 second-chance points compared to La Salle's six. The Spiders shot 86 percent (24-of-28) from the free throw line and hit six three-pointers.
Prior to tip, the Richmond Athletics Department honored six Spiders in a Senior Day ceremony. Seniors Liz Brown, Okoro, Keri Soppe, Yazmean Burgess, Amber Battles and manager Shannen Bedford were all honored.
The Spiders will be back in action Wednesday, Feb. 18 when they travel to Duquesne for a 7 p.m. tip.
