GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team used three solo home runs and great pitching to beat the UMBC Retriever, 3-2, at the Charleston Baseball Academy in Goose Creek, S.C. on Friday afternoon.

With the victory, Richmond evens its record on the season to 3-3, while UMBC falls to 0-1 on the year.

OF Michael Morman, 3B Matt Dacey and 1B Doug Kraeger all hit solo homers to lead the Spider offense, while DH Kurtis Brown continued his hot start at the plate, going 2-for-3.

On the mound, RHP Ryan Cook (2-1) was terrific for the Spiders, allowing just two runs in six innings of work. Cook didn't allow a hit until the sixth and struck out three batters to earn the win.

Out of the bullpen, RHP Dan Martinson was great for Richmond, pitching 2.1 shutout innings, allowing just one hit. LHP Dylan Stoops recorded the game's final two outs to earn his first save of the season.

The game started off with a bang for the Spiders, as Morman led off the bottom of the first inning with a long, opposite field home run over the fence in right-center field.

After UMBC took the lead in the top of the sixth, Richmond responded immediately to retake the lead for good. Leading off the frame, Dacey blasted a homer over the field in right to tie the game at 2-2. Kraeger made it back-to-back blasts for UR, hitting his first homer of the season deep over the fence in left field.

Trailing 3-2, the Retrievers threatened in the seventh. With the bases loaded and no outs, Martinson got a strikeout and a pop out. UMBC then tried some trickery, attempting a delayed steal of home that was handled perfectly by the Spiders, getting UR out of the inning.

UMBC never mounted a threat in the eighth or ninth innings, as Richmond defeated the Retrievers, 3-2.

The Richmond Spiders will back in action on Saturday, when the team plays Lafayette at 3 p.m. at the Charleston Baseball Academy in Goose Creek, S.C.
