THE SERIES
This is the 71st meeting between the two teams in a series that dates back to 1941 and is tied at 35. The Spiders faced their in-town rival three times last year with the most recent coming in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament to end Richmond's 2013-14 season. After falling at the buzzer, 63-62, on Feb. 8 at the Siegel Center, the Spiders took a 73-60 win at the Robins Center on Feb. 26 to even the regular season series 1-1 a year ago.
THE SPIDERS
The Spiders are coming off a 54-50 victory on the road at Rhode Island Friday night that improved them to 13-8 overall and 5-3 in the conference. Genevieve Okoro led Richmond with 15 points as she went 6-for-6 from the floor. The Spiders are shooting an overall 41 percent from the floor and are outscoring opponents by a 4.1 margin. Janelle Hubbard leads three Spiders in double figures with 13.9 points per game.
THE RAMS
The Rams are coming off a 74-65 setback to La Salle this past Saturday as they fell to 14-8 on the season and 5-4 in the league. VCU has A-10 wins over Rhode Island, Saint Louis, Davidson, St. Bonaventure and George Mason. The Rams are averaging 62.9 points per game, while shooting 36 percent from the floor and average 8.6 steals per game. Isis Thorpe leads two Rams in double figures with11.3 points per game.
LAST TIME OUT
Richmond held on for a 54-50 victory over the Rhode Island Rams Friday night at the Thomas M. Ryan Center. Genevieve Okoro led four Spiders in double figures with 15 points as she went a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor. With the two teams tied at 46 with five minutes to play, the Spiders outscored the Rams 8-4 including 4-of-5 free throws to hold on to the victory. Despite URI outshooting Richmond by four percent, the Spiders forced 15 Ram turnovers that turned into 23 points for Richmond. The Spiders also hit six three-pointers, compared to Rhode Island's lone trey that came in the first half. In addition to Okoro, Janelle Hubbard and Lauren Tolson both tallied 13 points and four rebounds, while Olivia Healy added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Kylie Murphree led the team with a career-high five assists.
