Spiders Earn WNIT Berth, Play At Stetson On Friday

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders women's basketball team will face Stetson University in DeLand, Fla. in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) on Friday at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
The postseason berth is the sixth in the last seven years for the Spiders and marks the ninth time the team has played in the WNIT. The selection marks the 12th overall postseason appearance in program history.
The Richmond Spiders enter the postseason with an overall record of 18-13 on the season, having two of their last three contests. All-time in the WNIT, the Spiders have posted a record of 8-10.
The Stetson Hatters earned an automatic qualifier to the WNIT out of the Atlantic Sun conference for being the highest-finishing team in the league's regular-season standings that was not selected for the NCAA Tournament. The Hatters posted an overall record of 23-7 on the year, falling in the semifinals of the A-Sun Tournament to Northern Kentucky. Stetson finished second in the A-Sun regular season with a league mark of 11-3.
If Richmond advances, the Spiders will face Youngstown State or Duquesne in the second round of the WNIT.
The WNIT consists of 64 teams that consist of 32 automatic qualifiers and 32 at-large selections. The Postseason WNIT opens with first-round games Wednesday through Friday, March 18-20. The event culminates Saturday, April 4 with the championship game, which will be televised live on CBS Sports Network beginning at 3 p.m. ET. All games are hosted by participating schools.
