Women's Lacrosse Heads To William & Mary Friday
03/19/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
Richmond women's lacrosse shakes off its Pacific Northwest jet lag and gets back on the field Friday, with a 7 p.m. contest at William & Mary.
The Spiders dropped both games last week, a Wednesday nigh home loss to No. 15 James Madison 10-5 and a road loss at Oregon Sunday, 15-11. Richmond had won two in a row previous to those games, beating in-state foes Liberty and Old Dominion to end February and start March. Richmond is 3-5 near the midway point of the season, with three of their losses coming to teams ranked 15 or better at the time of the meeting.
Richmond has scored double-digit goals in three of its last four games, with a Spider scoring three or more goals in those three performances. Junior Emily Newman (New Albany, Ohio) has registered a hat trick twice in the past four games, with she and junior Charlett Stevenson (Darien, Connecticut) scoring four each in the 13-10 win over Liberty on February 28. Freshman Kim Egizi (Westwood, Massachusetts) has scored two goals in Richmond last three contests. The season high for a game was set by senior Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey), when she scored six goals in the 15-8 home win over Old Dominion on March 4.
Doyle and senior Bailey Zerr (Denver, Colorado) are tied for the team lead with 19 goals each. Despite not having a goal in the previous two games, Doyle has dished out four assists in the previous pair of games. She has 12 assists and is the first Spider to 20 points this season. Six Spiders have scored seven or more goals, with five of them having at least 10 points to this point of the season.
The Tribe comes in with a 2-4 overall mark, winning both contests last week for their first wins of 2015. William & Mary beat Longwood 20-9 and Old Dominion 15-9. They rank 15th in the nation with 14 draw controls. Amanda Johnson and Ellen Shaffrey lead the Tribe with eight goals each. Shaffrey and Abby Corkum, the team's assist leader with eight, are the two student-athletes with 10 or more points.
Friday's game will be the first for William & Mary since the season opener on February 15. Maryland won that contest 15-5. Doyle and Stevenson scored four goals each for the Spiders in a 13-7 Richmond win last season against W&M. The Spiders scored six goals in a row midway through the first half to blow open the game and get the victory. The two teams have evenly split their last eight meetings, with the programs trading wins over the last four year, the home team winning the last four matchups.
The Spiders will have a week before their conference opener, a home tilt on Friday morning, March 27, against St. Bonaventure, starting at 11 a.m.
