No. 23 Richmond Falls to Davidson in A-10 Semifinal

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The No. 1-seeded Spiders fell 11-10 to No. 4-seeded Davidson in the Atlantic 10 semifinal Friday afternoon. A late goal by the Wildcats lifted Davidson to the victory.

Richmond falls to 13-3 overall, while Davidson improves to 13-4.

Juliana Stanley led the Spiders with four points on three goals and one assist, and Alexis Morton added three points on one goal and two assists. Bridget Lonsinger scored two goals, and Meghan Rode tallied two points on one goal and one assist. Rileigh Meyer, Stella Axe and Emma Kroneberger each added a goal.

Defensively, CC Jacobs led Richmond with two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Rode also paced the team with eight draw controls.

In goal, Abby Francioli made 10 saves in 60 minutes of play.

Davidson scored three straight goals to open the game and take a 3-0 lead. Richmond responded with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Spiders tied the game 3-3 early in the second, but the Wildcats closed the half with two goals to take a 5-3 lead into the break.

Davidson struck first in the second half to extend its lead to 6-3, but Richmond answered with a three-goal run to tie the game at 6-6. The teams traded goals down the stretch, and the score was tied 10-10 with 3:27 remaining. After a save by the Davidson goalkeeper, the Wildcats regained possession and scored with five seconds left to secure the win.

The Spiders will await the NCAA Tournament selection on Sunday at 9 p.m. to learn whether their season will continue.
