03/22/2015 | Women's Track & Field
WILLIAMSBURG, Va – The University of Richmond Spiders track and field team continued to build upon its indoor success and started strong in the outdoor opener at William and Mary.
"We had some good early season performances with several athletes winning their events and others setting personal bests,” Richmond coach Lori Taylor said following the meet. “Today was our starting point and as we do throughout each season as a staff we'll discuss the good and the not so good and make adjusts as needed within our training to ensure we reach our goals. As athletes, overall they competed with good intensity and that's what we were mostly looking for today.”
The team had a great deal of success in the field events, beginning with freshman Liz Montague in the long jump, where she achieved a distance of 5.08 meters. Liz also placed second overall in the 100 meter hurdles.
Alena McGonigle also had a strong day, placing first in the shot put and second in the discus for the Spiders. Sophmore Sarah Timko followed her field teammates and placed fifth in the high jump. Senior Deborah Fajuyigbe continued her streak of strong 200 meter dashes, placing first in a time of 25.80.
Four spiders made an appearance in the 1500. Amanda Corbosiero, Kaelyn Heinicke, Kelly Bailey and Emily Graber finished fourth, fifth sixth and eighth respectively.
The middle distance runners also excelled at the 800 meter distance, where a photo finish placed Taylor Clevinger in first over her teammate Haley Preschutti. They were closely followed by Stephanie Hughes, who took fourth in the event.
Senior Amber Young made her first appearance after returning from a January injury. She placed third in the 400 meter hurdles.
The Spider men's team also saw some representation, with a few of the freshman cross country members running the distance events. Johnny Hogue ran a personal best of 9:00.28 in the 3000 meters. His achievement was followed by Ryan Lerda, who placed third in the 1500 with a time of 4:13.20.
The Fred Hardy Invitational will be held on March 28 and is the Richmond's only home meet of the season. 25 university programs from as far away as California will attend the event.
