UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders track and field team got off to a fast start at the 10th annual Fred Hardy Invitational on a rainy Friday evening in Richmond, Va.
“We were pleased with the few appearances we saw today,” Richmond coach Lori Taylor said. “The majority of our women ran in the 1500 and we were happy to see our team excel in that event”.
Taylor Clevinger led the charge in the 1500, placing second overall in a time of 4:34.51. Her teammates Amanda Corbosiero and Kaeyln Heinicke finished with her at third and fourth respectively, and the rest of the Spider team wasn't far behind. Alyson McGonigle took sixth, Haley Preschutti seventh, Emily Graber tied for 16th and Stephanie Hughes placed 20th.
But the 1500 was not the only place in which Richmond saw success. Liz Montague gave the Spiders a strong start to the meet during the afternoon field events. She placed fourth overall in the triple jump, achieving a distance of 10.94 meters.
Amber Young also placed ninth of collegiate runners in the 400 meter hurdles with at time of 1:06.70.
The Spiders were also represented on the men's side, where Matt Groff finished 13th out of the 62 men's 1500 runners, clocking in at 3:57.48.
“We are anxious to see how the runners compete Saturday, as this will be the day where we will see the majority of our athletes in events,” Taylor remarked. “Many friends and family members have come for this weekend's home meet and Senior Day festivities, and so we are looking for our athletes to come out tomorrow and run hard races.”
The Richmond Spiders track and field team will conclude the 10th annual Fred Hardy Invitational on Saturday at Robins Stadium. The meet gets underway at 9 a.m. with the men's discus.
