SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Richmond topped Mercer on Saturday to claim the SoCon regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the 2015 SoCon Lacrosse Championship. The Spiders will host the inaugural conference championship, which is slated to begin on Thursday, April 30 at Robins Stadium.
In its only other conference tournament, Richmond won both its games in the inaugural season, taking out both Atlantic Sun Conference co-champions to claim their first league crown and a bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
The tournament kicks off with top-seeded Richmond taking on fourth-seeded Furman at 5 p.m. on the opening day. Richmond finished the regular season undefeated in SoCon play with a 6-0 record while compiling a 10-4 overall mark. Furman earned a spot in the tournament with an 11-7 win over Jacksonville on Saturday.
Thursday's second semifinal matchup will feature second-seeded Mercer against third-seeded High Point at 7:30 p.m. The Bears had just a single blemish on their conference record, falling to Richmond in the final regular season game of the season to finish 5-1 in SoCon play. High Point pulled off a comeback 10-9 victory over Bellarmine on Saturday, scoring with just 40 seconds left to earn the No. 3 seed.
In their regular season matchup, Richmond topped Furman, 8-2, in the lowest offensive output of the season for both teams. Mercer edged High Point, 12-11, in overtime in the conference opener for both teams back on March 14.
The Inaugural SoCon Lacrosse Championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. The title game will be shown on ESPN3 while both of the semifinal games can be seen on the SoCon Digital Network.
