Women's Lacrosse Takes Win Streak On A-10 Road Trip
04/09/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
Richmond women's lacrosse puts its unbeaten conference win streak on the line with its first two road Atlantic 10 Conference games this weekend, at George Washington Friday at 3 p.m. and at George Mason Sunday at 1 p.m. The Friday gametime was moved up an hour because of the forecast for the nation's capital. The Spiders have a 6-4 all-time mark against George Washington and are 5-5 all time against Mason. Richmond beat both squads last year in a home weekend, taking out Mason 16-4 and beating GW 13-6 in the second weekend of April, 2014.
The Spiders have won their first three league games this season, all at home, and are 6-6 overall. Richmond is tied with Massachusetts with perfect 3-0 records at the top of the league standings through the first two weekends. The Spiders have outscored their three league opponents 35-20 and lead the league (in conference games only) in goals, points and draws controlled.
Richmond freshman Kim Egizi (Westwood, Massachusetts) is the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, earning her third such honor of the season on Monday. In UR's 6-5 overtime win over Davidson last Saturday, Egizi scored the game-tying goal as the Spiders were serving a penalty in the last two minutes of the game, and she assisted on the game-winning goal from senior Bailey Zerr (Denver, Colorado) in overtime. Egizi jumped to second on the team in points scored after scoring a game-high three goals and adding an assist in the win over Davidson in the team's lone game last week. She has 25 points on 15 goals and 10 assists this season.
Senior Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey) had two assists in the Davidson win and passed former Spider great Mandy Friend (2006-09) to become the Richmond career leader in assists, now at 95. Doyle leads the team with 21 goals and 23 assists, and is the league leader in assists and assists per game while sitting second in the A-10 in points and points per game. Doyle is 14th in the NCAA in total assists to this point of the season.
George Washington enters the weekend at 4-7 overall, but 2-1 in the A-10. The Colonials come in losing three of their last four games. GW has been outscored by 20 goals combined in first halves this season, giving up 30 more shots than taken in that first period. They have been outscored by two goals per game this season.
The Colonials are sixth in shots and fourth in goals-against average in league games only. Colonial Rachel Mia has scored 34 goals this season, leading the league in that category. She is fifth in the A-10 in points, as she has no assists. Jamie Bumgardner is second on the squad with 32 points and leads the team with 19 assists.
The Spiders will tangle with George Mason on Sunday after the Patriots return from a game at Davidson on Friday night. The Patriots have won three of their last four and enter the weekend at 7-4 and 2-1 in the A-10. They have split their only two games played at home to this point of the season. Due to a pair of lopsided losses, the Patriots have one more goal scored than allowed in total this year. Mason has 22 fewer ground balls than their opponent and 30 more turnovers in the aggregate of their season.
Jaqueline Spalding leads the team in goals (25) and assists (20), and leads the league in points and points per game this season. Three other Patriots have 20 or more goals each this season and goalie Taylor Carpenter has played all 666 minutes this season for Mason, allowing 118 goals and making 93 saves.
The Spiders will return home the following Sunday afternoon for the home finale and senior day against Duquesne, starting at 1 p.m.
