UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team had a pair of juniors selected in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday afternoon.
3B Matt Dacey was taken with the 13th pick of the 21st round by the Tampa Bay Rays, while OF Tanner Stanley was drafted with the 24th pick of the 36th round by the Kansas City Royals.
With the two selections in this year's draft, 10 Richmond Spider student-athletes have been selected in the MLB Draft dating back to 2010. If Dacey and Stanley choose not to sign with their respective teams, both would have one year of eligibility remaining.
Dacey earned First-Team All-East Region and First-Team All-Atlantic 10 honors this past season after becoming just the third player ever to lead the A-10 in home runs in consecutive seasons.
After hitting 12 homers in 2014, Dacey clubbed 17 this past year, while batting .313 on the season. Dacey also led the A-10 in runs scored (56), while finishing second in total bases (129), fourth in RBI (52), third in walks (35) and second in slugging percentage (.652).
In three seasons at Richmond, Stanley has started in all but one of the 140 games he's appeared in for the Spiders. Stanley had a tremendous rookie season for UR, earning Freshman All-American honors from Louisville Slugger, First-Team All-Atlantic 10 accolades and was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year.
For the Spiders, Stanley has posted a career batting average of .303 with 38 doubles, six triples, 13 home runs, and 99 RBI. This past season, Stanley started 42 of 43 games, batting .305 with 11 doubles and a career-high seven homers.
