Summer Spider Series: Rising senior Charlett Stevenson has spent her summer on an internship in New York. But it's not the run-of-the-mill affair. She details how and why in our next installment.
CS: My summer has been a crazy, unexpected, amazing summer. I am interning in New York City for Ryan Serhant. He is a real estate agent, star of Bravo's Million Dollar Listing New York, and an awesome person. I am working in SOHO at his close-knit office of 15 or so people and it has been the most amazing experience. Everyone in the office is extremely personable and fun to spend time with; it makes me feel like I have been working there for years. I have also made close friendships with the other interns running various errands and working on projects together.
Here is a snapshot of a typical day for me: It all starts with waking up at 5:45 a.m. to get my workout in and then struggling to pick out an outfit. Next, I take the train into New York City, hop on the number-six subway and pop out right at the corner of the block my office is on. Being in the real estate industry is very hectic so every day you have to brace yourself with what might lay ahead for that day. It is fun walking into an office where you never know exactly what to expect, but knowing that it will be a rewarding experience by the end of the day.
During the day, I do paperwork, make show books, LEARN so much about real estate, help agents on various assignments, etc. My favorite workday activities include attending the open houses, launch parties and events. My first week at the internship we had two extravagant parties, one was an after party of a gala and the other was a new development launch party that was being filmed by Bravo. After a crazy, fun/work filled day, I head home on the train (just from commuting I've read so much it's crazy) and fall asleep so early like a grandma because my day is absolutely exhausting.
I recently just got a few projects directly from Ryan himself, one of which is planning the entire launch party for a new development we have in Brooklyn. This job consists of getting vendors, a location, permits, paying everyone and it is being filmed by Bravo so “my life depends on it”. This is the most recent thing I'm working on and it will take a lot of hard work but it is a great opportunity for me to learn and produce on my own. I have learned more than I ever anticipated I would at this internship. Most notably, it has taught me to be even more effective at time management (I didn't think that was possible because being a student-athlete is so demanding), given me a broader range of people skills, and opened the door to the real estate world for me. Real estate is a field I have developed a passion for and now have an interest developing a career in after graduation this year. I could not have asked for a better experience summer internship experience.
