This is the last in our 2015 Summer Spider Series detailing some of our Spiders' summer adventures. Follow these posts to learn more about a few Spiders and what they have been up to this summer!
Summer Spider Series: Like in our last profile on Charlett Stevenson, rising senior Emily Newman has also spent her summer on an internship in New York City. She had a little different, though equally rewarding experience, as she details.
EN: This summer I was lucky enough to live in New York City while completing a 10-week internship program. It was an awesome 10 weeks because I was able to gain work experience, explore the city, and meet lots of new people. Four days a week, I worked at CPEX Real Estate, a commercial real estate firm located in downtown Brooklyn.
I loved the program: each day I was given new tasks and learned new things about the real estate industry. Aside from making cold calls and researching industry information, the interns were also able to hear from guest speakers every week. On top of this, we participated in workshops that focused on important skills such as Microsoft Excel and networking. All in all, I had a great time with the other interns and employees and now feel much more confident about life after graduation!
Outside of work, I used my three-day weekends to explore as much of Manhattan as possible and get used to living in the city (the subway proved to be challenging at first). I spent most of this time walking through the
parks, going to museums, and (of course) eating and shopping! My favorite parts were probably going to the observation deck of the Freedom Tower and walking FDR Drive at night.
All in all, I've had an incredible summer and feel very well prepared for the next chapter of my life thanks to this wonderful internship experience in NYC!
