Spider Soccer Falls 1-0 To Open Season Friday
08/22/2015 | Women's Soccer
Despite a 14-10 shots advantage, the Richmond Spiders women's soccer program opened up the 2015 season to a 1-0 loss to Campbell Friday night at Robins Stadium. The game was the season-opening contest for both squads.
The only score in the game was an own goal against the Spiders in the 80th minute when a cross was tipped in off a Richmond defender who was chasing the play back toward net and attempting to control the ball to get it out of the attacking zone.
After weathering a barrage of early play by the Camels in the first 15 minutes, the Spiders regained composure and collected seven first-half shots.
“A disappointing result, obviously, but I don't think we handled some of the pressure situations by Campbell early in the game,” said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. “I thought Katie Brennan played outstanding in goal tonight, but we were unlucky with some of our scoring chances.”
Both teams had seven shots in the second half, but not many of the chances were on goal.
Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) had two saves in the opening half and four more in the second, but her season record starts at 0-1.
Campbell goalie Alexis Connors pitched the shutout (1-0) for the Camels' first result of the year. She had three saves.
Richmond senior forward Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS) led all players with five shots in the game. She had one of three Richmond shots on goal.
The Spiders will play next on Friday, August 28, in a neutral-site game against Delaware. The game takes place at the University of Virginia's Klockner Stadium, starting a 4 p.m.
