WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Richmond field hockey suffered a 6-1 loss to No. 12 Wake Forest (5-1) on the road on Sunday afternoon.
The Spiders (2-4) have run the gauntlet of tough opponents over the last two weeks. Richmond has played three nationally-ranked teams away from home, including the 12th-ranked Demon Deacons on Sunday.
Wake Forest jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first half, but the Spiders responded with a goal from Avery Safford off an assist from Kasey Gilbride just 11 minutes into the first half.
The Spider defense locked down the Demon Deacons for the rest of the first half, making the margin 2-1 at the intermission.
UR goalkeeper Amanda Hoyt made four saves on the day in goal, while Wake Forest's Valerie Dahmen also made four saves.
Wake Forest pushed its lead out of reach with four straight goals. Jule Grashoff led Wake with two goals.
Richmond opens conference play next Friday at Lock Haven. The game will begin at 3 p.m.
