Field Hockey Outlasts UMass In Double Overtime
09/20/2015 | Field Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. – Richmond capped off an exciting road weekend with a double-overtime win against conference rival UMass, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the Spiders (4-4, 2-0) swept their opening weekend of A-10 play with statement road wins over Lock Haven and UMass (5-3, 1-1). UMass, Richmond and Lock Haven were picked first, second and third, respectively, in the A-10 Preseason Poll.
"The overtime win today was nothing short of our entire team body putting every bit of mental and physical grit they had into the contest," head coach Gina Lucido said. "Taylor Deitrick, Kelly Quinn and Avery Safford had sheer determination to get the ball in the goal, while Amanda Hoyt, Amy Cooke, Allison Haas and Meg Miller were a defensive front that could not be defeated."
On Sunday, UMass got on the scoreboard first with a 20th-minute goal from Shauna Rankin-Byrne off a penalty corner play.
The Spiders responded in the second half with offensive assertion, pelting the Minutewomen goalkeeper with six shots after just two in the first half. In the 53rd minute, the Spiders' Taylor Deitrick collected a ball in front of the net off a shot rebound and fired home the equalizing score, making it 1-1.
Both teams' defenses held strong throughout the rest of the second period, and for the second time in less than a year, the conference heavyweights went to overtime.
In the first OT period, Richmond put five shots towards the goal including one off a penalty corner. UMass countered with three shots, as UR goalkeeper Amanda Hoyt came up with a big save. She finished with four saves on the game.
As the second overtime period nearly came to an end, the Spiders found room on a breakaway and Avery Safford fed Kelly Quinn for the game-winning goal in the 99th minute. It marked Quinn's team-best third goal this season.
Richmond has now won both of its overtime contests on the season, and held A-10 opponents to just one goal on 15 shot attempts.
"While much hard work and growth remains, today's win was truly celebrated fully as our entire team elevated to another level."
The Spiders will play at William & Mary next Friday night at 6 p.m., followed by a Sunday home matchup with Delaware at noon.
