LAST TIME OUT
The University of Richmond women's basketball team (8-8, 1-2 A-10) fell behind Rhode Island (7-8, 1-2 A-10) early and was never able to complete the comeback effort, ultimately going down 57-50 for its second-straight loss in conference play.
Janelle Hubbard paced the effort on offense for the Spiders with 18 points with Karleigh Wike as the only Spider to join her in double figures with 10. Micaela Parson chipped in nine points, Bria Powell grabbed a career-high tying seven boards and Kylie Murphree set career highs with seven assists, five steals and three blocks.
The Spiders shot just 34.5 percent against URI's 43 percent effort from the floor. The Rams were able to best Richmond on the boards 42-33 and 14-7 in second chance points as a result.
JANELLE HUBBARD GOES FOR 1,000
Hubbard entered the A-10 opener opposite La Salle needing just three points to become the 22nd member of the Richmond 1,000-point club and did so with a pair of buckets in the first half on the 17-point victory. Later in the game she passed Christina King to move into 21st on the all-time scoring list. Next up is Denise Winn who scored 1,048 during her Richmond career.
MURPHREE'S STAT SHEET
Kylie Murphree is often left off the list of names mentioned as key contributors for the Spiders but her role on the court cannot be ignored. The sophomore guard has been at the helm of the offense for two one and a half seasons now while also being consistently asked to guard the opposition's best player. Murphree broke out against Rhode Island but not in the categories most often looked at. She booked career bests with seven assists, five steals and a trio of blocked shots in the game, cementing her role as top defensive option for the Spiders.
SEEMINGLY MEANINGLESS STAT - OR IS IT?
From the “that's an odd stat” department ... Richmond has posted a staggering 7-1 record when it scores first in the game against a 1-7 record when the opponent scores first. Often times 2-0 or 3-0 can be meaningless in a game that lasts 40 minutes but maybe there is more to scoring first than meets the eye.
WIKE DOUBLES UP
Karleigh Wike started the first seven games for the Spiders and averaged just 1.7 points and 2.3 rebounds before losing her starting spot. She regained it opposite Wake Forest on Dec. 20 and has reinvented her game. She posted an 11-point, 12-rebound night opposite Lafayette, both of which are career-bests. Wike has contributed 6.3 points per game, 7.5 rebounds per game and 28.3 minutes per game in the eight contests since Tuuli Menna and Lauren Tolson left the lineup with injuries.
