AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (9-9, 2-3 A-10) got a career-best 32 points from junior guard Janelle Hubbard who finished off a monster week of basketball by guiding the Spiders to a 74-68 victory on the road at UMass (6-11, 0-5).
Hubbard's effort combined with her 25 points at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday gives her 57 points for the week which allowed her to pick off two more Spiders on the all-time scoring list and move into 16th all-time with 1,104 points.
Karleigh Wike continued her coming out party with nine points and 11 rebounds while her teammate Micaela Parson stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Kylie Murphree pitched in three points, three assists and five more steals.
Richmond took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of Hubbard free throws but UMass answered in a big way with seven-straight points before the first media timeout to put the Spiders in an early hole. Out of the timeout, Hubbard let fly her first three-point attempt of the afternoon and buried it to cut into the lead.
Parson got into the act with a pair of free throws that tied the score then buried a triple of her own to give the lead back to Richmond, 10-7 with 2:52 left in the first quarter. Alyx Stiff of UMass answered with a personal 5-0 run to give the Minutewomen the lead back momentarily but Parson closed the quarter with a jumper from the foul line to knot the score at 12 after one.
Powell kicked off the scoring in the second quarter with a lay-up inside and then Hubbard shook loose. She buried threes on back-to-back possessions to give Richmond its largest lead at the time. She would bag 13 points in the first half to lead all scorers.
The Spiders led by just five points, 23-18, with less than five minutes to play in the second when Salita Greene collected a pass inside and finished strong for her first points of the afternoon. Richmond built the lead up to 12 after consecutive jumpers from Parson and Wike but a quick 5-0 run to end the quarter from UMass gave the Spiders a 31-24 advantage heading to the locker rooms.
Greene got the scoring started in the second half with a lay-in and Richmond quickly built the lead to 10 after a pair Wike free throws. After a mini run from UMass, Hubbard took over, scoring a pair of jumpers near the end of the quarter to make it a 12-point Richmond lead.
The advantage grew to 14 early in the fourth and with less than five minutes to play the Spiders were coasting with a 15-point lead. UMass continued to hang around however. They found their way to the free throw line and converted time and again to cut into the big lead. Hubbard was making her free throws on the other end to spell the damage, finishing the game 15-16 from the line. UMass was unable to get the ball in another Spiders' hand and the Hubbard was able to close this one out.
The Spiders will now get a week off from game action and will return to the Robins Center next weekend to square off with cross-town rival VCU on Jan. 24 at 3 p.m. Atlantic 10 leader Duquense will then visit on the following Wednesday before Richmond makes the trek up to St. Bonaventure, N.Y. for a date with the Bonnies on Jan. 31.
