01/04/2016 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond (8-5, 0-1) hits the road for the squad's first conference road trip, trekking to Rhode Island (9-5, 1-0) for a nationally televised game on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
The Spiders played in a high-energy bout with Saint Joe's on Saturday, coming up just short on a one-possession game in the final minute. Rhode Island is coming off a big win over Saint Louis in its home opener.
Junior ShawnDre' Jones has averaged 19.0 points over the last two games, hitting nine combined threes in tough games against Texas Tech and Saint Joseph's.
Terry Allen has emerged as an Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and All-American candidate. He is one of just two players in the country to average at least 20 points and eight rebounds a game. He has 23 consecutive games in double-figure scoring, the longest active streak in the A-10 and tied for the 10th longest streak in the country.
Richmond currently leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 25th in the country in field goal percentage (48.7). The Spiders have had eight games shooting over 50 percent from the field.
The game will be broadcast on ESPNU with Kevin Fitzgerald and Tim Welsh calling the action. Scouting Rhode Island
Rhode Island hosts Richmond after opening up conference play with an 87-57 win over Saint Louis. The Rams have been playing shorthanded with a number of key players losing time to injury.
Transfer Four McGlynn leads the team with 12.8 points per game and Hassan Martin has 11.9 points with 5.4 rebounds. Kuran Iverson is also averaging 11.7 points. Freshman Nicola Akele is the reigning A-10 Freshman of the Week with nine points and four rebounds against SLU.
Series vs. Rhode Island
Richmond leads the all-time series 13-8, although Rhode Island has won the last two games in a row. Rhode Island owns a 6-3 advantage all-time when playing at home against the Spiders.
All-American Candidate
Terry Allen has received praise from the national basketball media with writeups from ESPN, CBS, American Sports Network, Cox Sports and others on his stellar play to start the season.
Allen ranks 30th in the country with 20.0 points per game and is fourth in the conference with 8.2 rebounds per game. Allen also ranks 37th in the country in steals per game with 2.1.
He is one of just two players in all of the NCAA with at least 20 ppg and 8 rpg.
He has the most steals of any player in NCAA D-1 listed at 6-8 or taller.
He has tallied seven 20-point games and four double-doubles this season.
Dating back to last year, he has put together 23 straight double-digit scoring games and has 10 double-doubles in his last 23 games played. His active double-digit scoring streak is the longest in the Atlantic 10, and tied for 10th in the country.
Man Among Boys
Terry Allen was one of the best players on the court in the Las Vegas Invitational which featured Cal, West Virginia and San Diego State. Allen scored 54 points and had 19 rebounds in two games against nationally ranked teams. His 34 points and 13 rebounds against Cal set new career highs. Allen also hit 17 free throws against Cal, the most by any Richmond player dating back to 1969.
He was named to the LVI All-Tournament team for his efforts. That Monday, Allen was tabbed Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, his first career A-10 weekly honor.
Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
Richmond has averaged 78.8 points per game this season, ranking fifth in the A-10 and 80th in the country in scoring offense.
The most points scored in one season under Coach Mooney was 70.0 in 2012-13. Richmond's scoring record for one season is 84.8 points back in 1965-66.
Resume Building
Richmond finished the non-conference portion of the schedule with an 8-4 record and quality wins over Wake Forest, then-no. 14 California and Northern Iowa. Two of those wins came away from the Robins Center.
The Spiders strong start have them in the on-going national discussion for the postseason. ESPN's Jay Bilas listed the Spiders at No. 46 in his latest rankings, while bracketologist Joe Lunardi has UR as one of the first four out. NBC Sports picked Richmond third and an NCAA tournament squad in its midseason Atlantic 10 reset.
Finishing Strong
Against both Wake Forest and Cal, the Spiders built double-digit second-half leads, only to see the favorites go on big runs late. However, when WF drew to within two and after Cal built a four-point lead with less than five minutes left, the Spider defense only allowed a combined two field goals in both games, outscoring the opposition, 24-9, to end the game. Richmond shot 15-18 from the free throw line to close those two wins.
In other quality wins over Northern Iowa and Old Dominion, the Spiders didn't allow the opponent to draw within a 10-point margin in the second half.
Last year, 20 games were decided by five points or less with the Spiders going 8-12 in those contests. This year, UR has not allowed many nailbiters with Richmond going 1-1 in games decided by five points or less.
Nerdy Numbers
The Spiders have posted some impressive numbers in Ken Pomeroy's advanced statistics. UR's offensive efficiency of 113.1 ranks 22nd in the country, while the team's effective FG percentage of 56.1 is 21st in the NCAA. The Spiders have dished an assist on 60.4 percent of made shots, ranking 41st.
Richmond has only been blocked in just 4.8 percent of possessions, ranking fourth in the country in that category. Despite playing some of the national leaders in defense in West Virginia and ODU, Richmond still boasts a turnover percentage of 15.8, which ranks 38th in the country.
From Sixth Man To Lead Man
Last year's Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year, ShawnDre' Jones, has stepped up big as UR's next All-Conference-type point guard.
Following in the small but mighty shoes of Kevin Anderson, Cedrick Lindsay and Kendall Anthony, Jones moves Richmond's offense with his speed, leadership and basketball savvy.
He is averaging 14.9 points per game with a 44.0 three-point percentage and a team-best 80.4 percent mark from the free throw line.
Jones also ranks fifth in the Atlantic 10 with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.6.
T.J., Point-Forward
T.J. Cline has a unique role on the floor for the Spiders. While he technically plays the five position on the floor, Cline acts like a point guard on offense much of the time. He handles the ball at the top of the key in traffic, distributing the ball and leading the team in assists. He is also a dangerous threat to shoot the three if a defense sags on him.
However, T.J. provides an excellent alternate option to Terry Allen's post game as Cline also possesses several patented scoring moves from the block with his back to the basket.
Hit The Khwan
Redshirt-freshman Khwan Fore has shown flashes of athletic brilliance this season with acrobatic dunks and incredible speed off the dribble.
He has put those performances together recently with three consecutive double-digit games each besting his previous career high. He scored 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting against Saint Joseph's.
Record Watch
Terry Allen reached the 1,000-point plateau with his 25 points against Bethune-Cookman. He became the 44th member of the 1,000-point club at UR, and eighth player to reach it under Coach Mooney. With 1,199 career points, he's now 28th all-time and 22 points behind Eric Poole.
Coach Chris Mooney is just five wins away from 200 victories at the University ofRichmond. He is currently third all-time in wins at the school, just two behind Malcolm U. Pitt for second all-time.
On Pace To...
With the season about one third over, the Spiders are on pace to shatter a number of records.
UR is projected to finish with at least 579 assists, breaking the previous school record of 548. The Spiders are also projected to hit 939 made field goals, breaking the previous record of 922.
Terry Allen is on pace to score over 680 points this season which would rank third all-time in total points scored in a season. UR's last 20 ppg scorer was Curtis Blair (20.2) in 1991-92. Allen is also on pace to finish second for the most steals in a season.
