Spiders Fall at Saint Joseph's, 5-2
10/14/2016 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Meaghan Carrigan and Keaira Clark both scored for the Spiders, but the University of Richmond women's soccer team was unable to overtake a threatening Saint Joseph's offense, as it fell to the Hawks 5-2 on Thursday night at Sweeney Field.
“It was a strange game,” head coach Peter Albright said. “We were very sharp in possession, but we defended a restart poorly, and we got caught in too many counterattacks.”
Saint Joseph's started the scoring in the 10th minute, when Dakota Mills scored from in front of the goal. The Hawks then took a 2-0 lead in the 26th minute when Emily Gingrich sent a shot past goalie Carlie Blessing on an assist from Mills.
Richmond would get one back in the 32nd minute when Carrigan scored her eighth goal of the season from directly in front of the SJU goal. Freshmen Lindsey Belli and Alyssa Walker were both credited with assists, as Belli sent a long ball to Walker, who headed it to Carrigan for the score.
Saint Joseph's took the 2-1 lead into the break, and came out strong to start the second half, scoring in the xx minute to take a 3-1 lead. Xx was credited with the goal.
Richmond would not back down, as Clark scored her second goal of the season in the 69th minute when she sent the ball into the net after it deflected off of the SJU goalie when she saved Lexi Prillaman's shot.
The Hawks took the momentum from there, scoring twice more in the final 20 minutesto take a 5-2 win.
“I credit Saint Joseph's, they executed a good plan,” Albright added. “As for the Spiders, Keaira Clark was very good, and, in spite of the score, Carly was very good in goal.
Richmond returns to action on Sunday afternoon, when they travel to Washington, D.C., to take on George Washington. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
