Spiders Fall Short at George Washington, 2-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team played a dominant second half on Sunday afternoon, but a late goal was not enough, as the Spiders fell, 2-1, to George Washington in Atlantic 10 play.
“I was disappointed with our performance in the first half,” head coach Peter Albright said. “I thought we came out very tentative and unsure of ourselves. The second half, we heavily outshot them and scored the goal, and I thought that we showed we belonged in the game with them. Unfortunately, a game is two halves, and this time of year we have to be better than that.”
George Washington took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute when McKenzie Cowley received the ball inside the box and sent a short ball past goalie Carlie Blessing.
The Colonials doubled their lead just before the half, when Dani Frese netted her first goal of the season to make the score 2-0 entering the break.
Richmond came out in force in the second half, rattling off 11 shots to the Colonials' two and putting on the pressure offensively with three corner kicks.
The Spiders' goal came in the final minute, when Olivia Aha sent a ball to Lexi Prillaman, who crossed the ball into the box for Alyssa Walker to finish for her fourth goal of the season. Despite having the momentum, Richmond was unable to score again in the final seconds.
The Spiders and Colonials each finished with 13 shots and four corner kicks, while Blessing finished with six saves
“We had some great contributions from some new players,” Albright added. “Jenna King came in and played the second half at right back, and was very good. I thought Walker was very good at attacking midfield and ended up getting a great goal, and Carlie Blessing had a very good game in goal.”
Richmond returns to action on Thursday at home when it plays host to La Salle. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
