Spiders Have Solid Showing in Season Opener

LEWISBURG, Va. – It didn't take long for the University of Richmond swimming and diving program to pick up right where they left off last year. In the team's first meet of the season, the Spiders posted a total of 17 top-three performances against Bucknell and Boston.
The Spiders finished the meet 1-1 after defeating Bucknell 179-119, and falling to Boston 162.50-136.50.
In her first collegiate meet, freshman Hannah Gouger recorded two first place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke with times of 56.22 and 2:02.18, respectively. Junior Hannah Verrette took second in the 200 and fourth in the 100.
Junior Erin Barry won both the 100 and 200 breast stroke at 1:05.64 and 2:21.66, respectively.
Junior Annie Lane logged three top-three performances, including second place finishes in both the 200 and 500 free. Lane also finished third in the 100 free where sophomore Morgan Soulia took second before she won the 200 IM.
Senior Hannah Matheson won the 200 fly with a time of 2:05.93 and took third in the 100 fly, while sophomore Nicole Piercy finished third in the 1,000 free.
The Spiders' 200 medley relay team of Gouger, Barry, Matheson and Brynn Robertson clocked 1:47.23 to take second, just behind Boston's 200 medley team.
In the diving event, senior Irina Chiulli won the 1M event with a score of 234.65 and took second in the 3M event with a scored of 248.95. Junior Laura Rokop took fourth in the 3M and fifth in the 1M while freshman Sydney Weiskopf registered a top five finish in the 3M event with 227.30.
The Spiders return to the water on Friday, October 21 for the annual Richmond Duals. Action will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Robins Center Natatorium with the diving events while the swimming events will start at 5:00 p.m. at SwimRVA. All Richmond Duals information can be found here.
