Spiders Down Explorers, 4-3
10/21/2016 | Women's Soccer
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Meaghan Carrigan scored twice for her third multi-goal game of the season, as the University of Richmond women's soccer team downed visiting La Salle, 4-3, in Atlantic 10 action.
“It was a strong offensive performance tonight from the Spiders,” head coach Peter Albright said after the game.
The Spiders started out strong, as Carrigan scored her first goal of the game in the ninth minute when she received a cross from Lexi Prillaman and sent the ball past the La Salle goalie. Freshman Jenna King was also credited with an assist for her pass up the field to Prillaman.
La Salle tied the game in the 22nd minute, when Marykate Bateman headed the ball past goalie Carlie Blessing, but a strong performance in the midfield and defensive end kept the Explorers off of the board for the remainder of the half.
“Lindsey Williams was brilliant in the defensive center mid role,” Albright said. “She is so smart, and her positioning and judgment, combined with her amazing effort, really led the way.”
Richmond was able to take a 2-1 lead into halftime, when Kiara Clark scored in the 44th minute on a long, sailing shot that ended up in the top right corner of the net. Ashley Gross and Olivia Aha both assisted on the goal.
The Spiders came out strong in the second half, and took a 3-1 lead in the 60th minute. It was Carrigan again, as she took a free kick from just outside the box, and sent it into the top left corner of the goal for her 10th goal of the season.
After back-and-forth play for the next 20 minutes, the Spiders went up 4-1 when Alyssa Walker broke free and poked the ball past the La Salle goalie for her fifth goal of the season. Prillaman and Clark both assisted on the goal.
Despite a three-goal differential heading into the final minutes of the game, La Salle would not back down, and scored twice in less than three minutes, first on a long shot and then off of a corner kick, to make it a one-goal game with under five minutes to play.
The Spiders were able to stop the Explorers at three goals and take a 4-3 win despite the drama in the final minutes.
“Meaghan had another great night, and we withstood a late charge from the Explorers,” Albright added. “This was an important three points for us as we head back on the road for our game on Sunday.”
La Salle finished the game with a 24-17 shot advantage and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Blessing finished with six saves in goal for the Spiders.
Richmond returns to action on Sunday, when they travel to the Bronx to face Fordham. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
