Spiders Take #9 Virginia To The Wire, But Fall 4-1
10/18/2016 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Head Coach Gina Lucido always likes to challenge her teams against some of the best teams in the country.
On a beautiful Tuesday afternoon, that's exactly what happened at Crenshaw Field with ninth-ranked Virginia visiting campus. The Spiders went toe-to-toe with the Cavaliers, but eventually fell, 4-1.
Junior goalkeeper Amanda Hoyt had a career-high eight saves in the game, while senior Emma Johansson scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season for the Spiders.
After toppling the #2 team in the country last week, UVA came in with momentum and grabbed the lead in the 11th minute, scoring on a penalty stroke to take a 1-0 advantage.
Richmond (6-8) wouldn't go quietly however with freshman Abby Lyons feeding Johansson right in front of the goal to score the equalizer in the 17th minute. It was Lyons' third assist of the season, which ties her for second on the squad.
UVA (11-5) would then rely on their All-ACC duo of Riley Tata and Tara Vittese to take the lead back. Tata scored off an assist from Vittesse in the 18th minute and then extended the lead just over a minute into the second half to grab a 3-1 advantage.
The Spiders would try to claw back in the game, pulling Hoyt for an extra player in the field, but Vittesse would score her second goal of the game in the final minutes to wrap up the 4-1 decision for the Cavaliers.
Richmond returns to action on Friday evening when the team travels across town to take on crosstown and Atlantic 10 rival VCU at Cary Street Field. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
