PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Behind goals from senior Kelly Quinn and sophomore Olivia Hubert, the University of Richmond field hockey team picked up a 2-1 road victory at La Salle on Sunday.
"The team reaped the reward of their persistence to mature on the field," said head coach Gina Lucido. "The captain leadership from Quinn, Emma Johansson, and Kasey Gilbride is leading this team to becoming our best. We reamin determined and very focused at being in the drivers seat to making the conference tournament."
Sophomore Thalia Williamson connected with Quinn, who found the back of the cage to give Richmond (5-6, 3-2) the 1-0 lead.
"Quinn put the team ahead with a convincing goal and Gilbride made a pivotal goal line save to keep the Spiders momentum in the first half," said Lucido.
In the 52nd minute, Hubert extended Richmond's lead to 2-0.
La Salle (5-6, 3-2) wouldn't go quietly as Sunday's contest proved to be another tough Atlantic 10 Conference battle. The Explorer's cut the Spiders' lead to one in the 58th minute with a goal from Kendall Krieder.
The Explorers continued to battle looking to launch the equalizer after back-to-back penalty corners with just six minutes remaining, however junior goalkeeper Amanda Hoyt remained focused in the box and knocked away each opportunity, preserving the Spiders' 2-1 victory.
Hoyt matched her season-best mark with five saves against La Salle. This is the third time this season she has had five saves in a game.
Richmond returns to action on Sunday, October 9 for an Atlantic 10 showdown with Massachusetts at Crenshaw Field. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. and will be available on the Atlantic 10 Network.
