Spiders Dominate Bonnies In Home Finale, 3-1
10/28/2016 | Women's Soccer
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Lexi Prillaman scored twice and Meaghan Carrigan added a goal to lead the University of Richmond women's soccer to a dominant 3-1 win over St. Bonaventure on Thursday night.
“It was an important three points to keep our hopes alive for the Atlantic 10 tournament, and it was a really solid performance all the way around,” head coach Peter Albright said after the game.
Prillaman started the scoring in the ninth minute of the first half when she received a cross from Jenna King off of a Lindsay Belli free kick and sent the ball past the St. Bonaventure goalie for a 1-0 lead.
The score would stay the same through the next 20 minutes, but the Spiders dominated possession, rattling off shots and testing the Bonnie defense.
Richmond doubled its lead in the 32nd minute, when Prillaman broke through again, this time on an assist from Brooke Beam inside of the box. Her shot hit the inside of the lower left post, falling into the goal for a 2-0 advantage.
Just over four minutes later, Carrigan capitalized on an opportunity when she received a short ball from Ashley Gross and sent it into the goal for a 3-0 lead entering the half.
The Spiders came out in the second half with momentum, but were unable to extend their lead in the final 45 minutes. St. Bonaventure's lone goal came in the 82nd minute, when Mirae Whitaker snuck the ball past Richmond goalie Carlie Blessing for her first goal of the season.
The Spiders dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Bonnies 26-10. Blessing finished with two saves in goal, one in each half.
“I thought our fullback play was really good,” Albright added. “We established the wide parts of the field and were able to open up the middle. Meaghan and Lexi did a really great job taking them apart with solid finishes.”
Richmond returns to action on Sunday for its regular-season finale at crosstown-rival VCU.
“It looks like the winner of that game will make it to the A-10 Championship,” Albright said. “It's a city championship, it's a big rivalry game and we're really excited. We're hoping we can get a big Richmond crowd out on Sunday.”
The Spiders and Rams will face off at 1 p.m. at Sports Backers Stadium to determine their postseason fate.
