Spiders Dominate Saint Louis 7-0 on Senior Day
10/30/2016 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – It's tough to have a better send off to a college career than the four seniors of the University of Richmond field hockey team had on Sunday afternoon.
On a beautiful afternoon at Crenshaw Field, the Spiders posted a dominant effort in a 7-0 win over Saint Louis to cap off the 2016 regular season and lock up the second seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament. It was the final home game for Emma Johansson, Kelly Quinn, Maria Madsen and Laetitia Commeyne.
Six different Spiders found the back of the cage, led by junior Hannah Thomson who scored twice on the afternoon. Quinn, along with Katrina Balatgek, Megan Miller, Elise Zwicklbauer and Olivia Hubert all scored a goal piece.
Richmond was dominant all day long, logging 32 shots and 16 shots on goal, while holding the Billikens without a shot or a corner.
The Spiders came out firing from the start, unleashing six shots in the first three minutes, including Balatgek who corralled a rebound off a Richmond and corner and found the back of the cage just 2:46 into the contest to give the Spiders a 1-0 lead.
Richmond continued to control possession and pushed its lead to 2-0 in the 22nd minute when Miller gathered a loose ball off a corner and fired it home.
Thomson got her first goal of the game with under six minutes to play in the first half when Emily Bowe dished it to Thomson, who scored on a point blank shot to give the Spiders a 3-0 lead at the break.
Hubert extended the Richmond lead to 4-0 just over 10 minutes into the second half, scoring her third goal of the year off a loose rebound in the circle.
Less than two minutes later, Zwicklbauer took a pass from classmate Kaitlyn DaSilva and rocketed her second goal of the season past the SLU keeper to push the lead to 5-0.
Thomson would add the Spiders' sixth goal of the day by herself, dribbling through the SLU defense and blistering a shot into the back of the cage in the 57th minute.
Richmond would wrap up the scoring in a perfect way with the senior, Quinn, deflecting Zwicklbauer's shot into the cage to cap off the 7-0 win.
The Spiders will face off with reigning A-10 Champ UMass in the first round of the conference tournament this weekend at VCU. Game time on Friday at Cary Street Field is set for 2:00p.m.
