Spiders Turn in Solid Performances on First Day of Patriot Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va. -- With one day of competition in the books, the University of Richmond swim and dive team have turned in solid performances in the water. The Spiders currently sit in fifth place with 132.50 points. Drexel is leading after day one with host George Mason in second place in the team scores.
Senior Irina Chiulli continued to shine on the spring board. The senior won both the 3M prelim and final with another NCAA Zone Qualifying mark during the prelims with a score of 296.65, which is a season best thus far. Junior Laura Rokop finished fourth in both the prelims and finals while freshman Sydney Weiskopf was in seventh during the prelims and moved up to fifth in the finals. Freshman Maddy Chao made her collegiate debut for a 12th place finish while senior Mikaela Gekas-Robinson was 16th in the event.
Freshman Virginia Marsh swam the 500 free for the first time in her collegiate career and clocked the fastest time by a Spider this season in the prelims of the event with a 5:00.75. She swam a 5:01.12 during the finals. Junior Annie Lane finished with at 5:05.84 while sophomore Nicole Piercy clocked a 5:07.15, her fastest time in the event this season during the prelims and finished with a 5:08.33 in the finals.
In the 200 IM, freshman Hannah Gouger was the top Spider finisher, turning in a time of 2:09.89. Junior Hannah Verrette registered her fastest time this season in the 50 free prelim at 24.19 and finished the final at 24.30.
In the two relay events on the first day of competition, Richmond logged its fastest times in both the 200 free and 400 medley. The 200 free relay team of Verrette, Gouger, Brynn Robertson and Marsh, touched the wall at 1:37.24, while the 400 medley team of Gouger, Erin Barry, Hannah Matheson and Marsh finished at 3:51.56.
Day two of the Patriot Invitational continues tomorrow with prelims beginning at 10:00 a.m. with finals set to begin at 6:00 p.m. The 1M diving event is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Complete details can be found here.
