LEWISBURG, Pa. – Richmond (4-3) pulled to within one at several points late in the second half, but Bucknell (6-2) ultimately pulled out a 73-68 win over the Spiders on Wednesday night in Sojka Pavilion.
The Spiders won the rebounding battle and were nearly even in shooting percentage, but a number of good looks from three rimmed out for Richmond and Bucknell was able to convert in the final minutes to keep UR at bay.
Richmond grabbed a season-high 45 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive end. UR won the points in the paint battle (32-26) and scored 11 points on second-chance opportunities.
However, Richmond's 15 turnovers led to 14 Bucknell points, including 10 in the fast break.
Senior T.J. Cline led Richmond with 22 points, five rebounds and two assists. Khwan Fore scored a career-high 19 points with seven rebounds. ShawnDre' Jones added 11 points and four assists.
Julius Johnson and De'Monte Buckingham each had eight rebounds, which marked a new career high for Johnson. Johnson also had a career-high four assists, while both players scored six points.
Bucknell's Kimbal Mackenzie led all scorers with 25 points, including four threes. Zach Thomas and Nana Foulland each scored 14 points.
After a dunk from Buckingham tied the game at 19-19 at the 8:28 mark of the first, the Bison opened an eight-point lead at 31-23 with 2:14 left in the first half. A Bucknell three-pointer made it a nine-point margin with 15 seconds left in the stanza, but Jones answered with a buzzer-beating three right before half to make it 36-30.
Richmond went on an 8-0 run in the second half, punctuated by a Marshall Wood driving layup and the Spiders had a chance to take the lead twice. But Bucknell responded on the offensive end each time and the Spiders could never draw even in the final minutes.
Richmond returns to the Robins Center for a three-game homestand, beginning with Wake Forest at noon on ESPNU.
