HAMPTON, Va. – Perennial NCAA Tournament contender Hampton used a late push to send the University of Richmond women's basketball team (4-6) home with a tough 72-45 defeat. The Spiders battled the Pirates for much of the contest before a late surge to grab the victory.
Janelle Hubbard had the cap taken off the basket as she scored 11 of her team-high 12 points in the second half as the lone Spider to reach double figures. She also pitched in six rebounds.
Ragan Wiseman made the first start of her career and scored nine points on 3-4 shooting from long range. Jaide Hinds-Clarke made it a freshman duo making its debut in the starting lineup; she scored four points and grabbed three rebounds but struggled with foul trouble.
Lauren Tolson continued to be a steady presence off the bench for the Spiders. She scored seven points to go with five rebounds, a pair of assists and topped all Richmond players with 28 minutes of action.
The first half of this one was extremely competitive. The Spiders found themselves in an early deficit after the first quarter but battled in the second. Hinds-Clarke buried a pair of free throws to get the scoring started and Tolson canned a triple to cut the Hampton lead down to just five with 7:57 to go in the quarter.
Hampton answered with a layup but Wiseman hit one of her three triples to cut the deficit back to four. After a jumper by Karleigh Wike on the next possession the Spiders were in business but the two sides traded for rest of the quarter and Hampton held serve to take a five-point advantage into the locker room.
The Lady Pirates came out firing in the second half. They would shoot 50 percent in the quarter and build a lead that the Spiders were unable to overcome in the end. Hampton was able to pick up a win to move back to .500 for the season while the Spiders dropped back to 4-6.
Richmond returns to the Robins Center on Saturday to play in the second part of a doubleheader and will take on East Carolina with tip scheduled for 4 p.m. The team will then take a quick road trip to visit Furman on Dec. 20 before heading home for the holidays.
