ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (4-4) suffered a setback on Sunday afternoon at the hands of Cleveland State (3-4), 69-65, snapping the team's four-game winning streak.
Micaela Parson and Jaide Hinds-Clarke were the only Spiders to reach double-figures, scoring 16 and 12 respectively but it Kylie Murphree that stole the show this weekend. She matched her career-high with eight points for second day in-a-row and handed out a career-best nine assists to go with four yesterday. Murphree also added four steals for good measure on Sunday.
Janelle Hubbard and Lauren Tolson each added nine points while Ragan Wiseman followed up her breakout effort with five points today. As a team the Spiders shot 37.9 percent from the floor but it was Cleveland State shooting 66.7 percent in the fourth quarter that doomed the Spiders.
The Spiders held a nine-point lead late in the first quarter and even went into that first break with an eight-point advantage but Cleveland State went on to outscore Richmond, 17-11, in the second quarter to even the tally at the halftime break.
Parson drove the basket and scored to push Richmond ahead to start the second quarter but Cleveland State tied the game for the seventh time on the very next possession. The two sides traded baskets until the 3:30 mark in the third quarter when the Vikings made a driving layup to take the lead for good.
The Spiders tried to fight off several large leads late but never got closer than a four-point deficit the rest of the way. Cleveland State made its free throws and Richmond was unable to answer from long range to cut into the gap.
The Spiders have a little bit of time off during finals week before returning to the Robins Center floor on Saturday (Dec. 10) to do battle with defending Ivy League champion Penn, a program that won 31 games and advanced to the NCAA tournament a season ago.
